Calamine Powder, USP/NF Grade (CALAMINEUSP)

Calamine Powder, USP/NF Grade

Calamine is a fine, pale-pink mineral powder composed primarily of zinc oxide (ZnO) combined with a small proportion of ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃), typically around 0.5%. The ferric oxide content gives the material its characteristic soft pink coloration, distinguishing it from pure white zinc oxide. The powder is dry, smooth, odorless, and features a uniform particle size suitable for blending and dispersion in manufacturing processes.

This grade meets USP/NF specifications and contains not less than 98% zinc oxide after ignition (CAS 8011-96-9; formula ZnO Fe₂O₃). It is insoluble in water and soluble in acids, remaining chemically stable under normal storage conditions. The material is non-flammable, non-reactive, stable even under fire conditions, synthetic in origin, and supplied as a free-flowing solid.

For optimal storage, keep in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry location between 15–25 °C (59–77 °F), protected from direct sunlight and excessive heat or humidity. Standard personal protective equipment including safety glasses, gloves, and a dust respirator is recommended during handling. The product is non-regulated for ground transport (D.O.T.).

Menthol Crystals USP/BP (MENTHOL)

Menthol Crystals USP/BP

Synthetic racemic menthol in crystalline form, conforming to USP and BP pharmacopoeial standards. Composed of a 1:1 mixture of D-menthol and L-menthol enantiomers, with specific optical rotation between −2° and 2°, indicating optical inactivity. These crystals are white or colorless with a characteristic peppermint aroma and mild cooling effect (~50% intensity compared to pure L-menthol). Exhibits melting points of 28 °C or 38 °C due to dual crystal forms. Very slightly soluble in water, readily soluble in ethanol, volatile oils, and other organic solvents. Used in topical analgesics, lozenges, decongestants, oral care, cosmetics, food, and industrial applications. Manufactured synthetically under GMP conditions and intended for cost-effective formulations not requiring full L-menthol potency.

Product Specifications

Chemical Name DL-Menthol (Racemic Menthol)
Synonyms (±)-Menthol, dl-Menthol, Mentholum racemicum
CAS Number 89-78-1 / 1490-04-6
Molecular Formula C₁₀H₂₀O
Specific Rotation −2° to 2° (optically inactive)
Melting Point 28 °C or 38 °C
Appearance White crystalline powder or colorless needle-like crystals
Odor Characteristic peppermint
Solubility Slight in water; readily soluble in ethanol and oils
Origin Synthetic

Applications and Benefits:

  • Topical formulations: creams, gels, ointments
  • Throat lozenges and nasal inhalers
  • Chewing gum, candies, and flavorings
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash
  • Shampoos, body washes, and lotions
  • Cigarette and tobacco flavoring
  • Cooling agents and fragrance intermediates

Caution:

Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and mucous membranes. May cause irritation. Use with proper ventilation and personal protection. Store in a dry, cool area in tightly closed containers between 15 °C and 30 °C. Do not substitute for L-menthol in formulations requiring pure enantiomer. Keep away from oxidizing agents, acids, bases, and ignition sources.
